Introduction

Skiathos is the gateway to the Northern Sporades — a green, pine-and-beach island in the north-west Aegean whose town quay and small marina sit on the south-east coast, two kilometres from the airport.

The Story Behind

Skiathos has a long seafaring past; in the Byzantine era the people moved inland for safety to the fortified Kastro on the north coast, used on through Venetian and Ottoman times.

Local Life

The quay is the heart of the town's summer — cafés, ferries and charter boats — and provisioning and services are all a short walk away.

Best Time to Visit

Late spring to early autumn is the season; the Sporades get fresh northerly wind in high summer. Call ahead on VHF 77, as charter fleets hold most berths and your own anchor is often needed.
